Safety Boat Course

RYA Safety Boat Course
The aim of the course is to introduce the techniques used in powerboats escorting racing fleets of
dinghies and windsurfers, providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets, and assisting in race
management. Techniques for canoes/kayaks and kite surfers will also be discussed.

The Instructor will be a highly experienced power boater but also possessing the practical experience of working with dinghies.

Specifically the course covers:

Boat checks and the safety equipment needed on board

Race management

Boat positioning with respect to the fleet

Boat handling in close proximity to sailing craft/kayaks etc.

Dinghy rescue – methods for recovering persons from the water.

Dealing with entrapments

Righting multihulls & performance dinghies

Windsurfer recovery and rescue.

Recovery of kayaks/canoes.

Towing – alongside and inline towing.

Rescue of other water users

Lee shore rescues

This is a two day course with a minimum age to attend of 16.

You must already possess the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate.

Note: We often find that students on these courses are a ‘bit rusty’ on the powerboat handling side when they attend. As you will be handling craft in close proximity to people it is essential that you can ensure your handling is good before attending.
